Reed Gift Fairs Melbourne February has kicked the retail year off to a bright start, signifying the upturn in the Australian economy and giving retailers and wholesalers alike a positive outlook for the rest of 2010.

The inaugural gift and homewares fair of 2010, held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from January 30 to February 2, brought retailers - keen to stock up after Christmas and seek out New Year trends - together with over 320 local and national wholesalers exhibiting their products.

The event, which was sold out to exhibitors three months ago, saw a four per cent increase in visitation*, which bodes extremely well for the uplift in the Australian economy and retail industry in general. Indeed, spend as a result at the fair currently totals $26,276,643**.

Reed Gift Fairs Exhibition Director Omer Soker said Melbourne February had surpassed expectations.

“The scene over the last few days has been great and we really feel that things are picking up for the retail market. Wholesalers are happy, retailers are buying and 2010 is looking good. We believe this result will be echoed throughout the year at all of our fairs,” he said.

Jewellery wholesaler Peter Burgess of Port Macquarie-based B Luscious was one of many exhibitors celebrating great success at the fair, citing good sales and strong new contacts.

“We have experienced our best ever sales at this fair with plenty of new leads as well as seeing some familiar faces,” Mr Burgess said. “We exhibit at all of the Reed Gift Fairs because we feel the timing of the fairs fits well with retailers buying cycles. The next on our calendar is Sydney February in three weeks’ time and given the success we’ve had at Melbourne, we’re really looking forward to it.”

Mr Soker said visitors to the fair had enjoyed making the most of their time at MCEC with Reed Gift Fairs new Online Fair Planner.
